St George Church (Alexandria)
St. George's Church or St. George's Church (Greek: Εκκλησία Αγίου Γεωργίου); (Arabic: Church of Saint George) is a Greek Orthodox church inside the Babylon Citadel in Coptic Cairo. It is part of the Holy Patriarchal Monastery of Saint George of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa. It is the only round church in Egypt.
History of church construction
It was built in the 10th century on top of the Roman tower of the Babylon Fortress. The church is linked to the Monastery of St. George. The church is the seat of the Pope and Patriarch of the Greek Orthodox Church of Alexandria.
The current structure was rebuilt after a fire in 1904, construction finished in 1909. Since 2009, the hegumen monastery has had the rank of bishop with the title of Bishop of Babylon (“Bishop of Babylon”).
